Lucy Eaton stars in Florida triumph

Skipton’s Lucy Eaton, pictured front left with her Florida tech team-mates Skipton Golf Club is celebrating another headline achievement by one of our young members who progressed through the club’s highly acclaimed Junior Academy. Lucy Eaton proved the inspiration in her American university’s ladies team that pulled off a spectacular victory in the NCAA finals in Florida last week, the top annual competition on the US collegiate golf circuit. Lucy, 23, who lives in Skipton and has just completed her fourth and final year of a university golf scholarship in the States, was a member of the Florida Tech team The Panthers, that pulled off an unbelievable finish to the season by winning the NCAA 2nd division. Success was made all the sweeter, as team members had been shocked to learn earlier this year that the women’s golf programme at the university was to be scrapped after the Spring season. Lucy commented at the time: “We all just had our mouths open in shock. No one could say anything. We were just all heartbroken.” Later that day on the team’s group chat, Lucy wrote: “New target acquired. Let’s go win nationals.” The Florida Tech team channelled their anger and frustration into the kind of storybook run that transcends sport, finishing fourth in the Sunshine State regionals in Cleveland - considered to be the most competitive in the US. Lucy had the lowest score in any round for any player at 4 under and finished seventh overall. In the stroke play qualification of the All America Finals she came third individually. The Panthers then advanced to the NCAA Championship staged at Palm Beach Gardens, before going on to land the Division II title [...]

Skipton Golf Club Juniors are 2018 league champions

Skipton Golf Club Juniors are the 2018 champions in the Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs Junior League Division 1, winning 14 of their 24 matches, drawing three, losing seven and finishing with 31 points. The team’s final match was at Bradford Hawksworth, when Harry Ayrton lost 2 and 1, Ben Topper halved on the 18th and Frazer Clarke won 3 and 1. Bingley, with a match in hand, were unable to overhaul Skipton. It proved a very good team effort all season long, with Harry Ayrton the outstanding player, winning all bar one match, his last, playing in top slot. Six players have represented Skipton Juniors and while the club will now lose half of them on account of age, a number of young up-and-coming players have gained valuable match experience, boding well for next season’s title defence. The club’s drive with juniors through PGA-qualified professional Ben Mallinson is producing emerging talent that will help the junior section at representative level in the future. Skipton’s junior team has again been sponsored by Scott Janitorial Supplies, of Keighley, whose managing director Keith Airey is a long-standing Skipton member and former scratch team player.

Captain’s Day Skipton Golf Club Captain Steve Clayton held his annual competition for both the men’s and ladies’ sections recently. Top of the pile in men’s division one was up and coming junior golfer Ben Topper with 41 points just ahead of Alastair Woodhead. Division two was a closer contest with Richie Forrest on 39 points taking first place after a countback with another junior Harry Ayrton. The winners of each ladies’ division respectively were Gillian Brown, Pat Eaton and Kay Donoghue. Bradford Team Championship The Skipton outfit of Matt Ryder, Chris Payne, Rob Nesbitt and Max Berrisford secured 4th place in the Bradford Team Qualifying medal at Cleckheaton last week. Matt Ryder was the standout performer with the best gross score on the day of 71. The team now qualifies for the finals to be held in July. A particular mention should go to Robert who didn’t score too well on the 9th hole at Cleckheaton but who showed the resolve and metal to not let it bother him too much and finished strongly. Well done team! Ladies’ Team Matches The A Team were back in action against Headingley on Monday. On what was described as a lovely course and very enjoyable rounds, the team played some excellent golf but were unfortunately beaten on the day 6-1. However, they will be out for revenge next Wednesday when they return for the home leg. Good Luck Ladies! The B team managed a 5 to 2 home win against Ilkley this week in revenge for a similar win by Ilkley on their home course. Junior knockout final

The final was played on Saturday 19th September between Ben Topper and Hannah Eaton. Ben was giving 3 shots to Hannah who was in prodigious form and, after three holes was already 3 up. Ben was struggling and was not playing the golf we know he is capable of. However, by the fourth he steadied and halved the hole. Hannah, however, continued to play flawless golf parring holes with ease. A half on hole 8 gave Ben a glimmer of hope but this was quickly extinguished by Hannah who continued her rich vein of golf and ran out winner after hole 11. To his credit Ben never gave up trying and it should be a comfort and consolation to him when it transpired that Hannah had played the 11 holes in only one over par! Congratulations to Hannah as winner but also to Ben who accepted his defeat graciously. Both players were a credit to the Junior Section.
