Skipton Golf Club celebrates championship hat-trick

Skipton Golf Club is celebrating a sizzling hat-trick of high profile championship successes. The first came when the club’s Andrew Knowles and Paul Pethybridge came from three points back to claim the title of Supreme Champions at the Yorkshire Challenge. In the three-day event played over Yorkshire’s trio of Ryder Cup venues – Ganton, Lindrick and Moortown – they compiled 131pts to overhaul second-round leaders Michael Williams and Guy Henderson, of Eaglescliffe GC, and win by four. 2018 Yorkshire Challenge winners Andrew Knowles and Paul Pethybridge, left. The Skipton duo, who were tied for third after 36 holes, having scored 42pts at Moortown and 43 at Lindrick, had three birdies in their first four holes on the final day at Ganton, plus another at the seventh. Knowles then birdied the 501-yard par-5 ninth for a net eagle that took them to 24pts for the outward run. They repeated their start to the round by clinching three birdies in the first four holes on the way back to the clubhouse, plus two more at 15 and 17. The second coup for Skipton was victory in the 2 018 Yorkshire Amateur Matchplay Championship at York GC for Steeton’s Max Berrisford, also a key member of the club’s junior team which this year won Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs Junior League Division 1 championship. A prodigious talent, but also one of the nicest young men you could ever wish to meet, Max’s achievement is huge, as he is first Skipton golfer to win this competition, following in the footsteps of some famous former victors, among them ex-Walker Cup captain, Rodney Foster, Masters winner Danny Willett and Howard Clark. The championship hat-trick came when the [...]

Skipton Golf Club Juniors are 2018 league champions

Skipton Golf Club Juniors are the 2018 champions in the Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs Junior League Division 1, winning 14 of their 24 matches, drawing three, losing seven and finishing with 31 points. The team’s final match was at Bradford Hawksworth, when Harry Ayrton lost 2 and 1, Ben Topper halved on the 18th and Frazer Clarke won 3 and 1. Bingley, with a match in hand, were unable to overhaul Skipton. It proved a very good team effort all season long, with Harry Ayrton the outstanding player, winning all bar one match, his last, playing in top slot. Six players have represented Skipton Juniors and while the club will now lose half of them on account of age, a number of young up-and-coming players have gained valuable match experience, boding well for next season’s title defence. The club’s drive with juniors through PGA-qualified professional Ben Mallinson is producing emerging talent that will help the junior section at representative level in the future. Skipton’s junior team has again been sponsored by Scott Janitorial Supplies, of Keighley, whose managing director Keith Airey is a long-standing Skipton member and former scratch team player.

War of the Roses Competition

As part of our 125th anniversary, Skipton Golf Club were contacted by fellow quasquicentennials, Accrington Golf Club. A seed of an idea then developed for a “Ryder Cup” style competition played home and away during both clubs’ 125th year. The obvious red and white rose county locations of our respective clubs lent itself to the tag line “War of the Roses”. Both clubs were keen to include members from all areas of the club and so on the 19th July 2018 under beautiful blue skies 43 golfers from our club made the journey over the county border to Accrington Golf Club where we received a warm welcome. The 22 pairs matches were played in a “Ryder Cup” style format. This included Men’s and Ladies 4BBB, Men’s Greensomes and Mixed Greensomes. The range of ability went from our own club professional to the highest male and female handicap available. This proved to be a memorable day for all who took part. Competitors took pride in representing their county and their club. Indeed, I personally took great pleasure in pointing out to the Lancastrians in our team that they were representing the White Rose County. What was especially pleasing was seeing the cross section of male and female golfers with handicaps from 0-36 all playing, rooting for each other and competing for their respective clubs. Unfortunately we were unable to bring the trophy back to Yorkshire, but we live to fight another day and look forward to hosting Accrington in the home leg on Thursday 27th September. My thanks go to all competitors on the day and especially our Lady Captain, Pat Eaton for her help in selecting the ladies who took part. Special mention goes to Sarah [...]

Skipton Golf Club launches new-look course

Skipton Golf Club opened its newly remodelled and extended 18-hole course on schedule at the beginning of August. On a busy launch weekend, a 12 hole stableford competition from the white tees and with a shotgun start was staged on the Friday evening and was fully subscribed. It formed part of a celebratory opening event for members. The following day, 104 golfers competed in the annual President’s Day stableford competition, the first over the full 18 holes. Ben Topper topped Division 1 with 42 points and a gross of 72, which currently stands as a new course record! Heading Division 2 with 35 points was Oliver Wild. “The weather was perfect and the new course received very favourable comment. In fact, both events proved a resounding success,” said club president Jonathan White. The remodelled course at Skipton, completed during the club’s landmark 125th anniversary year, incorporates two new par 4 holes and a brand-new raised 17th green. Many other improvements and enhancements all around the course include new tee beds and bunkers constructed by local contractor Oliver Sugden, of Sugden Amenities. Major redevelopment work at the golf club was necessitated by the Environment Agency’s Flood Alleviation Scheme for Skipton. It has involved a significant investment, which has been funded by the Agency’s compensation agreement.

Skipton’s Lucy Eaton is Bradford Ladies golf champion

Lucy Eaton receives the Bradford & District Ladies Golf Championship trophies from Northcliffe Golf Club’s lady captain Lesley Eccles. Skipton Golf Club’s Lucy Eaton has won the 2018 Bradford & District Ladies Golf Championship. Played over three days at Northcliffe Golf Club, Shipley, last week, 22-year-old Lucy, from Skipton, finished among the top eight in the competition, open to all clubs in the Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs, shooting both the opening day’s best gross and net to qualify for the matchplay. She then won the main competition by shooting level gross, going on to beat Northcliffe member and 2017 title winner Hannah Choudray in the final on the first extra hole by chipping in for a 2. It was the latest in a long line of golfing accolades for Lucy, who joined Skipton Golf Club as a junior in 2006 aged ten. She is a former junior captain and has now returned to the United States to complete her fourth and final year of university golf scholarship. Lucy figures among a good number of young, up-and-coming golfers who have progressed through the junior ranks at Skipton and are now making a name for themselves, at the same time helping to put the name of Skipton GC firmly on the map. England Under 18 Championships Another is Max Berrisford, of Steeton, who was called in to take part in the England Under 18 Championships, which took place at Fulford GC last week. Max, who has the lowest junior handicap in the Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs, came within a whisker of qualifying for the knockout stages, though didn't quite make it. He joined Skipton as a 12-year-old and [...]

Skipton Golf Club set to unveil new-look course

Skipton Golf Club is teeing up for the much anticipated launch of its newly remodelled 18-hole course on August 1. The club is this year celebrating its milestone 125th anniversary and the opening of the new-look course represents one of the single most important landmarks in Skipton’s long and proud history. A celebratory opening event for members is planned for Friday, August 3, with the President’s Day taking place the following day. An Open Event for visitors will follow shortly afterwards at a date to be determined. Work is now complete on two brand-new par 4 holes, which will significantly add to the appeal of the well-known golf course, which stands in an area of outstanding scenic beauty just off the A59 on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales market town. The new course continues to offer challenges to all standards of golfers. It becomes a par 71 with three par 3s, 13 par 4s and two par 5s. In addition, the planned introduction of gender-free tees will allow players of all abilities to challenge themselves at their own level. Major redevelopment work, involving significant investment, has been necessitated by the Environment Agency’s Flood Alleviation Scheme for Skipton. It has been funded by the Agency’s compensation agreement. Already in place and well established are a remodelled and enhanced 15th green and an extended 9th hole, now a par 5 following the construction of a new tee. Further work has been completed to improve sight lines on the signature par 3 16th green, which, along with the enhanced 15th, represents Skipton’s very own ‘Amen Corner’- two holes running alongside Eller Beck demanding both accuracy and a steady nerve! Other improvements include a brand-new raised 17th [...]

The Course Was Already Excellent. It’s Going To Be Even Better!

This year, members and visitors will be playing a totally revised golf course, which will include two brand-new, professionally designed and built Par 4 holes. The planned opening date is 1st August 2018 although keep an eye out for future newsletters for more information on this as we are subject to the vagaries of the British weather. For anybody who knows or has already played Skipton, you will be aware of some of the stunning holes that already exist. Our very own “Amen Corner” - the 14th, 15th and 16th - have been long recognised as three of the best holes in Northern golf. Well, you can take it on good authority that the two new holes to be opened this year are already being classed as the best on the course. You can imagine, then, just how excited our members are about the August opening! But, we have more – far more –than the new holes to look forward to, because this work has allowed us to undertake a total redesign of the course layout, which will see our existing short Par 3 opening hole turned into a short game practice facility and our existing Par 5 second hole become the new first. Other changes for the better are almost too numerous to mention, but include new and extended tee beds, totally new greens on both 15 and 17, and significant drainage and landscaping work completed across large parts of the course. The new layout will continue the tradition of Skipton offering a challenging and enjoyable course to golfers of all abilities, while at the same time providing golfers with some of the most stunning views of any golf course in the UK. Barrett Cup Final 2017

Barrett Cup Finalists 2017 This year's final saw two “has-beens” (their words –not mine!) of the Club square up in the shape of Jez Harding and Paul Pethybridge. The match produced a high standard of golf more reminiscent of their former years. It was a tight affair being all square through the first 4 holes though Jez should probably have had a slight lead after 3 putting the 3rd to only halve the hole. It was Paul who started to make the running winning both the 5th and 6th with pars to be two up. The par of the day came at the 8th when Pep’s second shot hit the bin on the 9th tee and flew across the green. He followed this up by thinning his chip but calmly rolled in the putt from 20 feet for a 4 and a half. Jez, despite this setback, pulled himself together to make a birdie down the 9th and only be one down. Peps then birdied the 11th to get back to two up but Jez was not done yet and won both the 15th and 16th to get the match back to all square. The turning point came on the 17th where Jez found the railway line off the tee so was one down playing the last. With Jez unable to make a birdie down the 18th Peps closed out the match for a 1 up victory and claim his second knockout trophy win of 2017. Well done to both on a great match played in excellent spirit.
