An event with a difference was held last night in The Dales Room and provided much to think about for all the golfers attending. This was a talk given by Dr David Houlston, former Director of Sport at Lancaster University and a highly qualified sports psychologist currently working closely with the Professional Football Association. To say it was thought provoking would be an understatement but clearly, everyone in the room was captivated by the presentation and left determined to bring into their own game some of the thoughts and ideas that were outlined by the speaker. Our own highly respected Professional, Peter Robinson, reinforced many of the things highlighted and reaffirmed how many of these were used by Professional golfers at the highest level in the sport. For those of you out there who were unable to attend, we may look at running a further session at a future date. You really did miss a different but excellent event at Skipton Golf Club. A huge vote of thanks goes to our speaker.
The Bradford and District Union of Golf Clubs weekly Alliance was held on the revised course at Skipton Golf Club on Wednesday 10th April under beautiful blue skies. Early starters were slightly disadvantaged by the cool breeze but the course was presented in excellent condition for the 140 golfers taking part. The winners with a superb stableford score of 45 points were David Smith and Phil Girdlestone from Clayton Golf Club. Well done to them. The full results are available on the Bradford Union website
As part of our 125th anniversary, Skipton Golf Club were contacted by fellow quasquicentennials, Accrington Golf Club. A seed of an idea then developed for a “Ryder Cup” style competition played home and away during both clubs’ 125th year. The obvious red and white rose county locations of our respective clubs lent itself to the tag line “War of the Roses”. Both clubs were keen to include members from all areas of the club and so on the 19th July 2018 under beautiful blue skies 43 golfers from our club made the journey over the county border to Accrington Golf Club where we received a warm welcome. The 22 pairs matches were played in a “Ryder Cup” style format. This included Men’s and Ladies 4BBB, Men’s Greensomes and Mixed Greensomes. The range of ability went from our own club professional to the highest male and female handicap available. This proved to be a memorable day for all who took part. Competitors took pride in representing their county and their club. Indeed, I personally took great pleasure in pointing out to the Lancastrians in our team that they were representing the White Rose County. What was especially pleasing was seeing the cross section of male and female golfers with handicaps from 0-36 all playing, rooting for each other and competing for their respective clubs. Unfortunately we were unable to bring the trophy back to Yorkshire, but we live to fight another day and look forward to hosting Accrington in the home leg on Thursday 27th September. My thanks go to all competitors on the day and especially our Lady Captain, Pat Eaton for her help in selecting the ladies who took part. Special mention goes to Sarah [...]
